Emma Hankinson

BSc (hons), MSc, MRes.

Hi, my names Emma and I’m a PhD student at Oxford Brookes University, UK. My PhD is focused on the conservation of Sumatra’s remaining elephant population and their tropical forests within the provinces of Aceh and north Sumatra. My research interests have been broadly centred around conservation, in particular the protection of ecosystems and biodiversity around the world. I have over 15 years’ experience working in the UK, Africa and Indonesia on behaviour, ecology and conservation and have worked with many forest species including the Angolan black and white colobus monkey in Kenyan coastal forests, and the Sumatran orangutan, the white handed gibbon and the siamang in Indonesia. Through my recent MRes in 2016 in Sumatra, I learnt about the plight of the Sumatran elephant, and the realisation that this species is in danger of becoming extinct in my lifetime. Therefore, I decided to self-fund my own PhD research and set up a project to help conserve this critically endangered species and its tropical forests.

Dr Abdullah

S.Pd, M.Si.

Dr Abdullah is from the Universitas Syiah Kuala, Banda Aceh and has been a lecturer in the biology department since 1999. Dr Abdullah specialises in the study of ‘Animal Ecology and Biology of Wildlife Conservation in Sumatran Tropical Rainforests’. He has been involved in Sumatran elephant research since 2002 and has participated in several projects including; 1. Estimation of habitat capacity of the Sumatran elephant in Tesso Nilo forest, Riau, south Sumatra (2002), 2. Habitat use by the Sumatran elephant in Aceh (in collaboration with Oxford Brookes University, 2008), and 3. Research collaboration with the International Elephant Foundation (2017). In 2019, Dr Abdullah created the group ‘Konservasi Gajah and Biodiversitas’, in a bid to help conserve the remaining Sumatran elephant populations within the Ulu Masen protected forest area.

Zulfikar

S.Pd,

Zulfikar undertook his undergraduate studies in biology at the Universitas Syiah Kuala. Since then, he has conducted research into tiger and elephant conflict in several Aceh provinces surrounding the Ulu Masen protected forest. Zulfikar is part of the ‘Konservasi Gajah and Biodiversitas’ team and is extremely passionate in conserving and protecting his native rainforests and endemic species from extinction.
